Having chickened out of climbing this on the way home from the Grand Ballon (to be fair to me, it had been a long, hot day!), I was determined to climb it. The climbing starts shortly after the bridge over the river Fecht (where you pass a sign explaining the climb had been used in the 2014 TdF) and it REALLY starts as it means to go on! I was glad to have tree cover/shade on the climb up as without it it would have been almost unbearable.
The road surface isn''t the best, but the forest makes for a nice climb up. You get a couple of less steep sections, but they are short and barely enough to catch your breath on.
On my ride, I came across a family on MTBs, the youngest of which was bombing ahead - I was able to keep his wheel and I kept grinding it out. As you pass the farmhouse inn Kahlenwasen, I pushed on giving the young kid a fist bump for his amazing effort and climbed to the top.
The descent to Sondernach has some better roads, but still a fair amount of grit, which lessens and the roads widen the closer you get to the bottom. Save enough in your legs for the climb up to Platzerwasel though, it''s a toughie!!
