Road the tour in 2014, having turned 50 I recivede a gift from my old friend. a 9 days cycling trip with PP cycling tours - starting in Schwarts wald and over the alps and Dolomites to end ind Lago Garda. What a friend to have and what at trip - Passo Pordio was passed in heavy rain and temp. around 7/8 celcius - the decent was _ COLD.
Climbing out the valley early is a must, especially if you are visiting anywhere near national school holidays, (mid-June to late August). Lower tree covered switchbacks open to alpine dramatic views towards the top. Incredible mountain views and great decending. Lots of traffic mid-day, but early or late are great times to ascend.
My wife and I rode this from the Canazei side. We started at 5:30 am as the day before our descent of the Sella was ruined by a constant flow of slow cars. Starting early was different. The only cars were a bread truck and fruit truck making their daily deliveries. The ascent of the 28 switchbacks takes about an hour but the descent down makes it all worthwhile. The roads are smooth and the turns banked. My best descent ever made possible by no traffic!
The Pordoi from Canazei is a relatively easy climb, 12 kms and little more than 6% average. It starts easy with also some flatter parts. After about 6 kms the split comes where one side heads to the Sella and the other way goes up the Pordoi. The climb never gets really hard and on 39x26 i could ride up the mountain. It is a nice start when doing the Sella Ronda, which has 4 climbs in total and 55 kms in total. The first time i achieved the best time in 51:06.
