Etna - Rifugio Sapienza via Nicolosi: 3 reviews
I was in Catania for a wedding and had a spare day so hired a bike from BICITECH via G. Terranova, 6, 95131 Catania. They fixed me up with a carbon framed Pinarello which as a bit small for me and had road gears which weren''t ideal for the climb. However I rode all the way from sea-level at the shop to Rifugio Sapienza via Nicolosi, just over 2000m of climbing according to Ride with GPS, in about 3.5 hours. I returned by way of Zafferana and covered just over 80kms in a total moving time for just under 5 hours. It was a hot August day (30+) but there was quite a lot of cloud on the mountain so it made it bearable. There is nothing very challenging in the climb: it is relentless, similar to Mont Ventoux which I climbed in June. I only had one water bottle and needed more. The only water that I found before Sapienza was in a souvenir wagon parked at about 1500m, so be prepared and take supplies or have a back-up team with you. The road surface on the Zafferana side is very poor and corrugated, especially at the start of the descent.
Nice climb, done with local mountainbike (unfortunately only small frame sizes available at Nicolosi). Road conditions are good, slope is pretty regular. Views are splendid! Did the climb in the morning; some traffic, mosty touring busses, if you want to avoid them, start early at 7:30AM. Possible to climb further on the off-road track under the skilift, would be a tough job but it''s not impossible. At the refugio are plenty of supplies.
