The Platzerwasel is a though, strength-sapping climb.
After Sondernach (where the descent of the Petit Ballon joins the road) it''s about 7 kms of very irregular climbing, with stretches well in excess of 10%. Finding a rhythm is hard.
The summit is a bit underwhelming. It''s not really a summit either, as the road goes on to join the Route des Cretes.
Perfect for those who like steep, irregular climbs, but then: who does?
I did this climb, my first long climb of the year on the 18 of May in perfect conditions, 20 degrees at the bottom and sunny. From Sondernach it is a tough climb. Over 10% in some parts and not much respite. I maxed out heart rate pretty early and so could not push as hard as I wanted. Need to do a bit more climbing training it seems. The climb to the Grand Ballon is nice but be carefulon the descent to Cernay or Soultz, its dangerous especially in the cobbled corners. Try the ones down to Kruth or Lautenbach depending on which side you need to be on.
When i started it, i thought i was climbing up to the Petit Ballon - which it turned out not to be. It is not too long, but a beautiful and pretty tough climb. The real climb starts after Sondernach, when the road turns to the right. From there it gets pretty steep, with bits up to 12%. I got chased by the same nasty flies the Ventoux is also famous for - at least they make you go fast! From the top of the Platzerwasel it is a great (and easy) climb to the Grand Ballon (via the Markstein). Do it!
