Rode up early 07/08/14 on the Bielle side. First 5km are a good workout switching back through small farm communities. Then you''re out on to the flats of Plateau de Houndas / Plateau de Roland. Very beautiful, little to hear but the birds and occasional ring of cow bells. After the Plateau there''s a further short climb on which a fully loaded tourer had stopped to regain breath, seemed to be finding it hard going, a further half mile and relief as it flattens again to the Col.
Nothing at the top but a sign and some space for cars to park.
The ride down is wonderful, fast as you can generally see well ahead, there''s little traffic and the road surface is good. The views are fabulous.
Perhaps not one of the out and out classics but a worthy ride through beautiful hills and countryside. Didn''t have time to ride the more difficult West side.
After climbing the soloir and heading back towards the Aubisque I decided to head up the Marie Blanque as I remembered it was steep from watching the tour de france. Well I think I climbed the wrong side! This side was quite steep for the first few k, then really flattened out. The decent was fun though as the road surface was very good.
