Just a quick note that although the road is closed you can still get to the top on a bike, the road is damaged near the end but still plenty of room to pass. You will need to climb the barrier at the col de Ranfolly. Actually works out well now as once you pass Nyon the road is all yours!
This is actually quite a hard and steep climb. The start from Morzine is really steep but there are some rest bites. Really the top of the climb is the col de Ranfolly which is about 2km from the joux plane. Before the Ranfolly its steep with some steep hairpins. And a steep hairpin before the top of the Ranfolly. After that it is a nice decent, there is a little kick before the joux plane, but the really the top is false flat. Nice climb though, but not as hard or as long as the other side but worth a try!
This is a deceptively tough (but not too hard) climb as it starts with a real kick from Morzine town centre. There are a couple of easier sections that give the legs a quick break and the main climb ends at the top of the Ranfolly chair-lift before an easier last 2km to the lake. Its not a hair-pin climb so a rhythm is difficult to achieve. Lovely scenery and great cafe at the end too. My best time is 42mins but we had a guest who did it on a mountain-bike in 33mins......truly awesome!
