I had a free weekend in Basel and so rode to Ballon d''Alsace on my Airnimal. The weather was very cold for April, about 0C on the top at midday. This climb was surprisingly pretty and surprisingly steep in the middle, especially after a long approach, and I had to work hard to earn the summit. There wasn''t much open at the top. The bar served coffee but had no food.
Climbed the Ballon in May 2018 at the end of a 600 mile tour of WW1 Western front set off from Munster in pouring rain climb was okay but had to quit at the top in 4c and wind due to hypothermia should have taken the watwerproofs! Didnt see any views just cloud.
This is the nicest side of the Ballon dAlsace. First you leave Sewen and its picturesque lake, on a flat road. Then it becomes really difficult. The lac dAlfeld and the forest are beautiful. The asphalt is good. There is few traffic. This is one of the roads I prefer.
Did the Ballon dAlsace in August 2008 as part of a 4 days stay in the Vosges. Before hitting the Ballon we (a group of 14 riders) hit already the Hundsrück. We took the side starting in Sewen (at the fountain) which according to some is the toughest side. The first part is ok, the final part too but the middle part is tough with long straight strokes. But the top and the views out there do well compensate for all the efforts.
