Devils Elbow, Spittal Of Glenshee story submitted on 9/1/2009
Not a very interesting climb, this. Its relentless going from the Spital of Glenshee up to the ski station and the A93 is quite busy with lorries at times. As the profile suggests the last km is hard. It felt more than 10% to me. Great descent to Braemar and wonderful scenery is some compensation for the climb though.
Bealach na Ba, Tornapress story submitted on 9/1/2009
Ive also done the Bealach na Ba in both directions as part of the 43 mile loop of the Applecross peninsula from Sheildaig. First day clockwise, going up the climb from Tornapress (east-west). Hardest part is the long straight before the hairpins at the top, otherwise its quite manageable. Descent to Applecross is very technical and requires a lot of concentration. If youre doing the loop all the way along the coast as I did from Applecross back to Sheildaig, dont underestimate how tough it is. It may not be that far, but there a lots of energy-sapping hills which dont show up on a touring map so stock up with food at the excellent Applecross Inn or the wonderful Potting Shed restaurant in the walled garden just beyond the village. Second day I rode the whole thing again anticlockwise and enjoyed it even more. Reached 49 mph on the descent towards Tornapress on that long straight bit before I caught up with the car ahead...
Buttertubs - Nord East, Thwaite story submitted on 1/13/2009
I did this climb in 2007 as part of a tour of the north Pennines. Began the day in Middleton-in-Teesdale and finished in Hawes. The area is beautiful, especially around Thwaite (Swaledale). Going from one dale to the next is tough going - short sharp climbs and steep descents - but very rewarding. It was one of my best days cycling, without a doubt.
Cow Calf, Menston story submitted on 1/13/2009
What can I say - this is my home climb! Have done it countless times and never tire of the marvellous view from the top towards Otley and the Chevin. Its short and sharp from the Ilkley side and was classified as a Category 1 in a recent Tour of Britain (I think). Theres the Cow & Calf Inn at the top if youre in need of refreshment!
