Difficulty score for Mt Ventoux is about 176 (22,7 km at 7,1 %). In terms of the ranking it's even not the hardest in Tour de France (behind Madeleine and Galibier). But if you "shorten" this climb (omit its first flat section) you get 21,2 km at 7,6 % (this values are often mentioned during Tour or on cycling sites). Thus its new score is 183 (it's more appropriate) and now it's the hardest in Tour de France. You can see that some climbs can be underrated by including their flat sections at the bottom. The best possible scoring system should calculate the formula for every climb section (i.e. kilometer) and sum it up. Cheers!
