Description

I climbed the passo fedaia from the caprile side several years ago. I am an experienced road biker and raced at the national level. I used a 39x27 and almost ripped my thighs off. the last3-4 km are brutal. not as bad as the mortirolo but painful.I recommend at least a 34x27(compact) or even better a 30x27(triple). always remember-unlike the alps, even the pros are not too proud to use very low gears in the dolomites. I call it Passo Fed..ahia, because I''ve been hurt many times doing this climb, I mean I suffered for many reasons. Main pain is coming from the flat zone, the first part from Caprile, then in a moment you reach the "highway of death" more than 3 km without any tornante till the mirage of "Capanna Bill". From there you must take a deep breathe to make the 2nd part, more interesting and panoramic. Don''t ride on Fedaia during the week end, it''s always busy !

I rode this twice in 2008 and can verify it didn''t get easier the second time. Not too bad to start with some relatively flat sections. After you pass through a scenic waterfall area, it gets seriously steep and actually gets worse closer to the top. Very long and the 9-15% for the last 5 or 6K make it brutal. A true mental/physical test.

One of the toughest i ever rode ! Compact cranck : 34x25 was maybe too heavy although I made it. 34x27 would have been better I think. Two day to go to the maratona dles dolomites.... So tomorrow an easy round sella ronde..... The suroundings of the fedaia are in one word : impressive !

If I have to describe it with one word it would be OUCH. This one really hurts if you have standard 53-39 cranks. I dont know what is harder, long false flat sections after gallery or last few km switch backs. One thing is for sure, you are glad when it is over. First time I climbed it it was cloudy with pleasant temperature and second time I had real drama on relentlessly hot day with some 36°C. Once you get there youll enjoy because the summit with glacier and lake is very nice.
