Roque de los Muchachos - Santo Domingo de Garafia

From whatever side you climb the Roque de los Muchachos ("the boy's rock"), you gain over 2km of height (you always start close to the ocean). This climb, on the northside of the isle of Las Palmas, turns on the side of the massive volcano of the Caldera de Taburiente. From a junction the road leads to an astronomical observatory (the observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos). On the other side, you start from Sta. Cruz de La Palma and, of course, the ocean.

The Roque de los Muchachos is situated in Canarias (Canary Islands) . Starting from Santo Domingo de Garafia, the Roque de los Muchachos ascent is 28.2 km long. Over this distance, you climb 2061 heightmeters. The average percentage thus is 7.3 %.

I climbed the Roque de los Muchachos in December 2006. It took me abt 5 hours to reach the top of over 2400 metres from the main city of La Palma, Canaries, Sante Cruz. Total distance over 40 kilometres from ocean level. Somewhere in the middle its gets really tough, but overall the climb is not too steep, the main problem being the length of the climb and the absence of drinking water underway. But the views are glorious and looking from the top into the huge central crater of La Palma is breathtaking.
