This is a less well known but beautiful climb. As you leave Luz you have a gentle warm up with many km''s of 2,3 and 4 %. Leaving Gavarnie the road goes around a few hairpins and you start to gain height more rapidly, with nice views to the valley below. Later the road straightens as it goes past the ski station and begins to open out into the high mountain scenery. We had a head wind which made this a particularly tough last 4 or 5 km''s, no idea if that is typical though. The day we did it, in mid June, there was virtually no traffic, there is no through road, just a car park at the top frequented by walkers. Overall a great climb, you can go back the way you came and then climb up to Cirque de Troumouse from just near Gedre, an equally if not more spectacular climb.

A great ride on the whole. The ride from Luz Saint Sauveur to Gavarnie is beautiful and the view to the Cirque de Gavarnie is awesome. From Gavarnie to the Port de Boucharo passing the ski station is a real pull. It leads you right out into the mountain scenery on the Spanish border. It is certainly a bit quieter than other climbs in the area and something a bit different. Its also a Mega descent back to Luz Saint Sauveur. Have a go. Its a Beast!
