Stories, information and comments from Pico de las Nieves climbers
Story by Martin van der Ploeg from , The Netherlands, submitted on 25/12/2012
I tried to climb Pico on 19-12-2012 and then again on 21-12-2012. Both times starting from Maspalomas, close to GC500 and simply following the GC60. It adds some km''s (total then a little short of 50 km) and an extra climb right at the beginning (to 480m) and a short descent + climb to Fataga. The 1st time I only reached Ayacata before the legs were full and the body empty. The second time I was succesful.
I''m 41, a regular cyclist but there aren''t many climbs in my neck of the woods. It usually takes me a couple of days to find my climbing legs and I have MG so all in all I thought it was tough.
Roads are all pretty good except for the very last bit (more a problem going down than up). Fataga, St Bartolomé and Ayacata offer cafetaria''s, restaurants and 1 or 2 shops. There is usually a stand at the top where you can get some food and drink as well. Views along the way are stunning (including at Teide on Tenerife).
