Cyclists should be prepared for any type of weather enroute and as much as a 30 degree temperature change. The climb starts in the historic north shore town of Paia and winds its way upcountry through sugar cane and pineapple fields past the Paniolo town of Makawao and into the scenic pasture lands of Olinda. Ride along rolling fields and through Eucalyptus groves enroute to pine forests at the 6,500 tree line. It took me roughly six hours to the top including rest breaks and plenty of stops for photos/videos, i wasn''t in a rush really. Weather was good on the day, i was cooling down through the clouds but once beyond that it was sunny and warm enough on the ascent. The park ranger at 7000feet was pleasantly surprised that i had brought several layers of clothing for the descent as they said it is quite common for unprepared cyclists to become hypothermic as they come down. Come prepared for the cold!
I took all my food, gels, two liters of water in a camelbak, rain jacket/gloves/hat/warm mid layer plus the jersey i was wearing knee length bibs. The descent took me 90mins to Paia, the road surface is excellent and i appreciated the extra clothing on the way down. As the weather was perfect i could have had a layer less but you never know what the weather will be like at that altitude. Epic climb, nice constant gradient. Really enjoyed it, my local climbs seem so small now:)
