Story by Mark Watson from Bainbridge Island, WA, United States, submitted on 09/04/2011
This a stunning climb from near sea-level to almost a mile elevation. It''s a gradual slope and you''ll sometimes see whole families biking up but that doesn't make it any less challenging. The first few miles are the steepest and the pavement is rough and momentum sucking. After the pay station ($5) the road is smooth and you can actually gear up a bit. At this point you start to get glimpses of your elevation gain as you see Port Angeles and the Strait of Juan de Fuca far below as well as the cascade mountains in the distance. Toward the top you start to get a view of the last couple of miles. It looks high up and steep. And it is. The last push to the top is steeper but the next-to-last bend reveals the snow capped peaks of the Olympics, seemingly at eye-level.

A lodge and cafe at the top offer a great place to refuel and hydrate while you soak in the view. If you ride a little further along the ridge you can look toward Vancouver Island.

NOTES: Bring ample water/fuel. Use a tail light (3 tunnels & shaded sections). The descent is fantastic with long views down road but consider a headlight for visibility and a jacket. Consider a 10-20 mile warm-up ride before the hill.
