Ah what a road.I could write a long essay on it''s merits but I won''t. On a road bike with sunshine and brooding cloud sometimes rolling round the Bernese wall of giants and not a motor car in site.Wonderful climb and wonderful descent

Groesse Scheidegg climb is an good companion to Axalp, and good ride to start an hilly holiday. You can start the cilmb two ways, riding from Meiringen to Willingen there is an earlier, steeper, partly paved road to the same climb. Just look at those red signs, Gr Scheidegg and picture of an off-road bike. I took this route the first time with roadbike and it really was an steep way to start. Because of steepness I’ll did the first part mainly out of saddle. After finding the main route, climb goes to relatively steady pace to beautiful flat section where river floats beside road. After this relieving section, just when your legs have thought they’ve done days work there comes an incredibly steep part, thoughti it is well over 10%. You’ll hear your legs moan in a silent day. After it incline again eases up and last part is again quite easy. Descent is scenery to the Grindelwald village.
From Meiringen to Gr Scheidegg pavement is less than perfect, with quite a lot bumps in it. No potholes or rails though. The other side to Gr Scheidegg to Grindelwald is better condition, so I recommend going up from Meiringen and down to Grindelwald.
Scenery, good climb ###No motos###, few cars, and last part is closed to most traffic.

Ive done the GS twice now and loved climbing it both times. The first time I went up it was on an MTB in cruise mode. We stopped several times for photos and lunch at Rosenlaui. The 2nd time was during the Inferno triathlon. That time it was up in one go, in a race situation and pushing all the way. I went up on the road bike with a 39-53 and 11-23 gearing. Could probably have done with a 25 on the back but was OK to climb for long periods out of the saddle. There is so much one can say about the climb. Its highly recommended not just because its there. The road surface is excellent, as are the views and the fact that there is no traffic for the last half are all reasons to recommend the climb. Its shaded for parts so its good on a hot day. Would definitely go back and do it again.

Started about 8am early August 2009 after driving from Zug, I parked my car near Meiringen train station, unpacked the bike and off! Its quiet easy to miss the Grosse Scheidegg ascent as I did so watch out for the small sign further to the right of the main road. The climb starts off ok then suddenly you you get hit by a sharp 10% for 500m shaded by trees, then for the while climb seems fine. The climb gets tougher till you meet the flat where the river runs and this part of the climb feels like a well earned rest. Once you meet the Rosenlaui restaurant you suddenly reach an incredibly steep section of about 15% this really hurts, once you get over this barrier its a tough finish, but just a relief. I was stopped by a herd of cows with about 500m to the pass! I had wait about 5 mins for them to clear! The landscape is stunning, a fantastic climb. For me, the Axalp climb close by from Brienz is a harder climb. Did Axalp 2 days prior to Gross Scheidegg.

I rode the Grosse Scheidegg from Meiringen to Grindelwald on May 26 2007 (right after doing the Susten pass). The top part of the road is very quiet because it is closed to most traffic; only the Swiss Postal buses are allowed on it. The bottom part of the climb had some cars on it, but by most peoples standards it is a quiet country road. The ride starts off deceivingly easy because there are several switchbacks and even one or two flat meadows to mellow it out; it is a nice ride alongside a little river that spills over the famous Reichenbach falls. The top half of the ride is the meat of climb. There is a section of 12.5+% grade that had me working hard even with a roadbike equipped with a triple. I seem able to keep going on a 10% grade for quite some time, but 12+% is where it really starts to hurt. If you are going to stop for a drink and food someplace then do it at the Rosenlaui restuarant or lower because there isnt anything else until the restaurant at the pass. Overall I liked the climb alot because of the woods, river, and alpine restuarants. On a hot day this is probably a nice climb because it is shaded by trees on the lower parts of it.
