Story by Ross from , France, submitted on 07/02/2007
I climbed the Sampeyre as part of the Fausto Coppi Cyclo (200k, 4,300m) in 2007. The climb is not well represented in the profile as there are many sections that rise over 12% with some at 17%. Given the vertical gain, average grade and steep sections, this is a very hard climb. As the entire col is on secondary road, the surface is paved but rough. This is of little consequence in the climb from Sampeyre but caution is needed on the descent – the speed gained on the steep descent pitches is dangerous. The initial part of the climb is not very interesting as it is tree covered. This helps if one climbs this col in the heat of summer. The top of the descent is spectacular in the rock formations, seclusion and some new road surface. A real treat and unlike the major passes in France. As a word on the Coppi Cyclo – I did the Marmotte last year and the Coppi is harder. It is 30km longer and 500m shorter but the secondary roads make the difference – the grades are very hard and break any rhythm while the descents provide no time to relax and recharge. The administration is tops – food is great and the roads are either closed or controlled – another big difference to the Marmotte. It is one of the great Cyclos and a true accomplishment once completed. Life is short – ride lots and don’t take chances on the descents so that you can ride more.
