Story by Ian Bond from Preston, United Kingdom, submitted on 08/06/2012
I was advised to do this climb when staying in Bourg d'' Oisan in 2011 when I had a week doing all the TDF iconic climbs in the area including Alpe d''Huez 5 times. This is a magnificent climb, hard and varied and wonderfully quiet without the hoards of the more famous neighbours. The road surface worsens the higher you go and you have to be very careful on the way down due to some loose material/chippings on the corners. Nevertheless this still appears in my top 3 basically because it gives you everything you want from an Alpine climb. Just brilliant.

Very, very hard! A pure climbers mountain and hardly any let-up whatsoever. Made more difficult due to its direct exposure to the sun - the same col used for the finish of the La Vaujany sportif and Grand Trophee ITT although neither events scale its full length - ultimately finishes on a very narrow quiet road in a dead end, with amazing views of the Mont Blanc Massif
