Did the Axalp climb july 2011, an good climb with an steep and steady gradient. Most of the climb is in shade wich is good in hot day, but also does block some of the wievs to the lake. For an scenic climb I would recommend some other.
I liked Axalp because when you find correct gear and cadence you can go almost to the top without changing pace. After Axalp village you’ll have an short section with some flatter parts, but after it you’ll hear your legs moan, as gradient increases even over that it was in beginning. You’ll face an crossing, take the right road to Chuemad and Lutschental and you’ll reach highest point. With no stops it took 1hr 20-30mins to me.
At the end, after Chuemad (1802 heightmeters) there is no more proper pavement, just two rails with quite a lot stones in them. They’re almost non- drivable with racerbike, and I decided not to go further.
Take care during descent because road is really narrow and there is some traffic (postal buses and cars).
Some corrections, if you stop to Axalp, you are just reached 1535m, and the steepest part is to come. In Chuemad you are 1802m. To reach 1848m you’ll have to ride over the bad section to Lutschental. In Chuemad total distance 13,3km and ascent1805-620, gradient 8,9%

Starting from Brienz on a beautiful hot clear day, August 2009 I had no idea what to expect....An extremely hard climb that averages about 10%, you will suffer on this climb no matter what. A good part of the climb is shaded by trees where the road is quiet narrow & tight which doesnt amount too much when I only saw 3 or 4 cars on my ascent. There is no rest bite, I have a 50-34 with a 12-27, my 27 was needed!
