Fantastic climb.. avoid the rain, there a couple of villages to stop along the way if you need more fuel. There is no sign when you get to the top... but you need to keep going past the small town of Letras.
My personal climb rating:

Impressive climb across all tropical climatic zones. Start with first light in Mariquita to get out of the heat early enough. Refill your bottles in Fresno (24Km), Padua (40km) and at km60. From here you still have 20km of lonely mountain to go and the altitude adds one dimension more to the challenge. Consider therefore some aclimatization prior to this. Above 3000m you can expect temperatures at 5C and you can be lucky if rainfall does not get you somewhere during this 80km of huge climb. Although the pass is a main road across the central cordillera I was never bothered by traffic (much less then La Linea). Really something unique one cannot find in Europe, both scenery and challenge. Highly recommendable!!!!
