Wrynose Pass - Fell Foot

Only rode this once. We were staying at Coniston YH for Christmas many years ago (1980s) when I was younger and a lot stronger. There was no traffic fortunately because I occasionally needed quite a lot of the narrow road. I was on my old Higgins 2WD drive tricycle and Im proud to say I managed with a 40"" bottom gear - of course its possible to ride very slowly on a trike. Nearly fell over when the front wheel lifted and I ended up sideways in the road but I succeeded in pointing it back in the right direction. Definitely 5 stars

Yip, this is a brute, the average gradient for this climb is farcical...its one of the toughest climbs out..gradually getting steeper all the way up - until a leg crushing 30% gradient for the last 100 meters...simply awful....why is it Im more frightened of some UK small climbs than I am of the big continental monsters?

There is a saying: ""what does not kill me can only make me stronger."" Well, what about something that very nearly kills you? Only short, but with gradients up to 30%, this feels like the hardest thing in the world when youre on it. And its not only the gradient thats against you. On the narrow road, oncoming and passing cars can seriously disrupt your rhythm. Dont just ignore them, mentally eradicate them: all your psyche must be focussed on that next turn of the cranks. Wear dark glasses so the motorists cannot see your pain. And choose a cool dry day. Any dampness can cause a fatal lack of traction, as can the smallest smidgin of sheep poo. Start in Ambleside and warm up via Little Langdale. Then, on the approach, really concentrate on conserving energy. Then you might, just might make it in one go. And when you do: chapeau, my friend.
