Stories, information and comments from Wintergreen climbers
Story by TooTallToClimb from , The Netherlands, submitted on 06/08/2014
Have done this climb twice now, the 3 km >10% are quite hard and had me praying for smaller gearing. Even in the ''flatter'' sections, there are quite some parts at 12-15% which really sap the energy from your legs and lungs. In summer, it can be quite hot, so bring plenty of fluids, especially since there is no supermarket at the top to refill, there are some restaurants though.

It''s probably the longest climb around, and as the profile shows, the first 5km of mild "false flat" just zap any momentum and energy you might have thought you had going into the climb. This profile is for turning into the Wintergreen ski resort, but you can also continue on the main road and arrive at the Blue Ridge Parkway (at Reed''s Gap). That climb is also listed on climbbybike.com. It''s ~2.5k of climbing from the ski resort entrance, and it bites ~12% average. Turn around and descend if you want a wicked fast ride and chance to hit 55+mph.
