I did this climb several years back, before the roadway was opened to cyclists. The guard let me go up so long as I got back down before the gate opened to the paying car customers. I remember locking into steady 160 bpm heart rate and climbing for 90 minutes. Some great views of Lake Champlain, connecting VT and NY. Descent was great, perfectly engineered road for the way down (WPA). Made it bac down to the gate in time, then back to my wife and the B&B for great pancake breakfast.

Rode up Whiteface Mountain as part of ride which also included one lap of the Ironman Lake Placid route. Did not know what to expect being the first time in Lake Placid and up Whiteface. I knew that stats said 8.5% avg grade, so I thought I was geared properly - 38X26...well I was wrong, dead wrong. Started the climb in Wilmington, I was already well into the first lap of the IMLP route when I decided to go up Whiteface only because I heard how hard it was. The grade kicks up to 10% avg almost right away after the veterans highway sign, I though hey, it only 8.5% so the grade must ease up after a while. WRONG, the 10% grade continues all the way to the park entrance (fee station) and beyond......I was way over geared, my cadence fell to 45-50 rpm but still decided to continue to the summit 8kms away. It took me over 90 mins to get to the summit and the grade did not let up until the last km to the stone gatehouse, WOW, that was a hard climb. Much harder than what the stats read. Superb views of Lake Placid & Mirror Lake!!!! A must do for any hill climber.

Cheers.
