Stories, information and comments from Weisssee climbers :

Story by Marinus Bos from , The Netherlands, submitted on 1/14/2008
Unfortunenately, I have had the same experience as Angel, one week prior. Although I had only driven 900 km (and 100 that day) the disappointment has nagged me for months. So, Im gonna try again this year. By the way, the first 8½ km are tough, but like Michael argues, if you divide the climb (in your mind) into 4 seperate parts, you must be able to achieve your goal.
My personal climb rating: 5 stars
Story by Gábor Györgyi from Budakalász, Hungary, submitted on 12/31/2007
The climb started at a cablecar station; the road went into the forest, next to a „No entrance” table. It’s a private road. The road was first climbing by 12-14% steepness, after 1-2 km there was a dark tunnel (I had no lights), but fortunatelly a lady with a car worked there and helped me (the problematic part is 100m long). In the first 4 km I had only few times views: downwards to the parking place and valley. After 4 kms the road became flat and I could see into the valley to north and to the snowy mountains. After crossing a stream the road climbed with 13-15% steepness on the other (east) side of the valley and from km to km it left the forest. I met with cows too. After 4 kms the next 4 kms were variable: down and up, and through galleries, on which stream run. In this section there were 2 times (?) tables that cycling is prohibitted. After a short 14% steep section we arrived at a small lake (2205 m). After 1,5 twisting kms with panorama to the mountains we arrived to a house and a parking- and helicopter landing place. Next to the road we found Weisssee (2365 m), but we also found that a road went straight along the lake and after a small climb it arrived onto a dam of the next lake: Hochwurtenspeicher (2417 m).
My personal climb rating: 5 stars

WARNING! I was here two weks ago, and when you reach km. 8.5 you find a FORBIDDEN CLYING signal. In this place there is a big parking when people leave their cars to catch cable-car for skiing. In the road there was a fence, and I was thinking about ignore it, but a cable-car employee came out to see what I did. Impossible to continue... When you have driven 2.200 kms to climb this... You can imagine my disillusion. :-((

Although I have not yet ridden the climb to Weisssee you describe here, I am planning to do so this summer. Im afraid the climb does not start at Uttendorf, but at Ausserfragant on the other side of the Grossglockner, to the east. Indeed, at Enzingerboden there is a lake called Weisssee too. This climb seems quite easy to me though... Nevertheless, Id like to compliment you on your practical website! It pleases me, and probably many other cyclists (as does salite.ch)
Story by Michael from Zurich, , submitted on 11/2/2006
This is a road which is rideable on a racer. But it is a very long and steep climb. The 4 descents embedded in the climb offer psychological assistance in that it breaks the climb into manageable chunks. But the climbing is almost all around 15%. Strong stamina required. Interestingly for cyclists, you have the last 14km to yourself, as cars are banned. For this reason worth a visit.
