Story by Morten Reippuert Knudsen from Copenhagen, Denmark, submitted on 14/10/2015
Did the climb last weekend - i was in Tuscany for l''Eroica with a 30 year old steel Koga-Miyata with 53/39-12/27 when i was redirected on a business trip to Neapels where i had the weekend off.. I usually climb on modern Bike in 34/30. The road from Neapels central was horrible, through dangerous neighbourhoods and 15km on bad pave/tile surfaced roads in heavy traffic. When i arrived to Torre el Grecko and started the climb i was a bit anxious about my low gear that was only 39/27 - but once the climb stated the surface went from really really bad to some of the smoothest tarmac i have tried in Italy which made the +10k/8,2% climb almost easy to ride. magnificent views over the Golf of Neapels from around 400m up until the clouds at 700m. Nice climb and even though it has several steep sections and peaks in the sub 20% range it was relatively easy ond the old steel rig with a low gear for adults-only. Nice climb, i''d wish i''d be able to do it on a sunny day. That sunday there was almost no traffic and the few busses let me pass on the downhill.

I did the climb in July 2015 and the climb was hot and muggy. I started the climb around 9:00 and was passed by several tour buses. They had a difficult time negotiating the hairpins and I had to stop when they blocked the road. Be cautious on the descent because they swing into your lane to make the turns. The lower part of the climb looks like a trash dump with liter everywhere. It is cleaned up as you go higher. The climb is hard with few breaks in the grade and the last few kilometers are above 10%. Your best views of Vesuvius are a couple miles from the top. The summit is a disappointing dirt parking lot with a few vendors selling trinkets and no view of the summit. You have to hike to the summit to see the crater and it takes about 30 minutes. Not something to do in cycling shoes.

did this climb today, on a borrowed aluminium frame. awesome climb with plenty of twists and turns to keep it interesting. view from the top wasn''t great due to the weather, but some of the views on the way were stunning. having to ride over the pave of napoli to get there was by far the worst part. did the climb in the middle of the day and it wasn''t too hot, particularly when you get to about 700m. the decent would be awesome if the road was closed. those wanting to hire a bike can do so through good luck.

Hello, same question as Pete: I want to climb Vesuvius but need to rent a bike. I have contacted rentalbikeitaly but they say climb is much too hard so you have to book a guide...I don''t need a guide because i''m a trained cyclist..So does anyone know if bike rental in torre del greco is possible? thanks

hello, i''ve been climbing this mountain hundreds of times in my life (i''m 39 now). pendences are a little overrated (average I think is above 7%) and last 2 km are the hardest and around (not far) 10%.
landscape is wonderfull.
be carefully during summer not to start climbing after 9 am or before 6 pm if weather is good, becouse of the heat.
not many places to find water along the way, just some restaurant...

I have a question. Do you know where I can hire a bike in Ercolano/Torre del Greco area? I hope to visit Pompeii, Herculaneum & Vesuvius. I cant find anywhere online, and wonder if there are any bicycle shops I could contact. Many thanks Pete
