Try climbing from the bottom of Jackson Bridge, from the White Horse up East Street first, yes, take care accross A616. This adds to the climb and just makes it better.

Shouldnt be climbed in winter as tarmac surface often coated in sheet ice from springs under tarmac when freezing on the tops but can be ice free up to Meltham House, so you can get in the steep zigzag above Staley Royd Farm, usually

Climbed it many times. You can make the climb longer by climb up East Street from the White Horse Pub in the bottom of Jackson Bridge, OK you have to be careful crossing the A616. Difficult to maintain a rythm on this one as gradient changes all the time. Usually a tail wind as blows from the west. Impossible in winter with sheet ice on the higher slopes or blocked with snow drifts. Think I may hold the record for the slowest continuous climb of this one as I use it to regain fitness after any break in cycling, usually in spring/early summer. NOT the hardest climb in the area - try Ewden Bank on Strines or Pea Royd out of Stocksbridge for harder climbs
