Attempted this with 5 friends after watching the TdF start in Lannemezan. Temp was high 20s, we had already cycled about 3 hrs (+ the Aspin and Tourmalet earlier in the week). Those 10%+ sections soon had us gasping and one by one the guys decided discretion was the better part of valour as we still had a 30-40 mile ride back to our fabulous gite(www.allons-y-pyrenees.com/tour_de_france.htm). Past halfway I didnt know that around the next corner was the flatter section after the midway point so I got off for food and drink when I could have kept going. When I made it to the top, there was Chris, the only other nutter who needed to beat the mountain. The climb was a great test of strength, fitness, resolve, and stupidity, the descent was mainly the latter as the loose gravel and very steep gradients meant cornering was fraught. Chris had a blow out a couple of days previously on the Tormalet due to super-heated rims so it was a balancing act between losing enough speed for the corners but not melting the brake blocks! WFrom Jouannot its a fantasic low gradient ride following the river downstream through Bas Nistos and then Lombres. Id rate the climb as a 3 and the descent as a 2 (unless the road sweepers had been out!).
