We climbed (june 2005) the Piornal during a stage from Vallejera to Jarandilla de la Vera. Having achieved the previous climb (Cabezabellosa, we descended into the Valle de Jerte, where we turned right (dir Plasencia) for a few hectometers, after which we took again left for the Puerto de Piornal, passing through many orchards and the villages of Casas de Castanar and Cabrera. The road is not too narrow, excellent surface and climbs very regularly at about 6 %. Just after the village of Piornal you can head for either Pasaron de la Vera or Garganta de la Olla, we opted for the second. The gradient flattens, and you cross an extensive high plane. The descend shows almost the same gradient (6%). The road is narrow, relatively good, and runs mostly accross a forest, until you see below you Garganta de la Olla, village of artists.
