From Potes to Riano with my son, him on hybrid and panniers, me on mtn bike and panniers, the weekend of the bad rain in the north, then the terrible floods further south, Sunday Sept 23rd 2012. We did not know about nature of the ascent, nor the deteriorating weather!Could not cycle near the top as lashed by wind and rain, so had to push bikes. Still, a cafe etc at the top i thought, but nothing, only a bus shelter! No other cyclists!! Forced open the door of bus shelter, windows both sides smashed, wind and rain poured in thro'' south window, son shivering uncontrollably, shelter floor starting to fill with water, felt we could be there for 3 days! After 30 minutes, incredibly, the clouds had raced across and could set off down to Riano.

No rain, but wind so strong we had to cycle DOWN the steep descent. I have travelled all over the world in my youth (am 62 years old) but never experienced such weather or worry when alone with my son. CHECK THE WEATHER BEFORE YOU GO,especially if using panniers and a mountain bike or in mid summer.

Will return to do the walking there i intended!!

Im not a very experienced cyclist so far, but for me one of the most beautiful ascents Ive made till now. Long, constant climb, with amazing views, for which you have plenty of time to admire. The road is in perfect shape and there are almost no cars. Mild temperature as of early august. The ride gave me a lot of pleasure. I rode from San Vicente de la Barquera at the Cantabric coast, and the first 50km are also great. cheers
