Stories, information and comments from Petit Ballon climbers
Story by Hank Kilker from bluffton, United States, submitted on 06/09/2013
I rode from Sondernach which was more than 11km. there is a parking spot for riders to go up either the col de platzerwasl or the petit ballon. The rode to the petit ballon is a good road without major potholes and such. From about 2 km in, it rises to about 9% and stays at least this the rest of the way. The last 4 km are at least 10-12% and the distance really hits the legs at that point. I had to stop several times to get the heart out of the red zone. My wife was the director sportif and stopped the car she drove up ahead of me to provide drinks. The trans department put down oil and stone chips for 2 km that morning which forced several stops to clear the tires. I rode a hard tail mt. bike fitted with ritchey 26x1.4 road tires. This way way harder than the col du bonhomme or the col de schlucht.
