Story by Michael Gaddis from , United Kingdom, submitted on 20/07/2008
Im primarily a rower, but every year after my season has finished, I take to my bike once or twice a week for a bit of a change and greatly enjoy it. I went across to Grafagnana with my family a for two weeks and my dad, brother and I all hired bikes from a bike-shop in Lucca (Poli if youre interested). None of us are really serious cyclists - although my Dad was a few years back - but it was always the plan to do the Passo delle Radici by the end of the holiday, since my dad had done it previously. The were times when I was right on my limit to stick with the local who tagged along with us that day and clearly the climb doesnt register as being a huge challenge when youre a local and ride over similarly mountainous terrain every time you go out. However, on its steeper sections, particularly that little sting in the tail at the end, its certainly tough for those of us who are used to the more rolling terrain of where we live. It was a real achievement for me: my first real mountain. Would I do it again? You bet!
