Description

Climbing the Malojapass from Chiavenna is like a walk in the park - untill you reach the final 6 ks of the climb. Coming up through the valley you can see the top of the climb. A beautifull wieving-point makes you mark. The rest of the climb is shere and utter force. Lots af hairpins. Everyone of them flattening out for 20 m. then it is 12% again. It is a very nice tarmac and surface and most cars treat you polite. When you are finally on top of the pass, please remember to spend some time looking back down the valley, overlooking your yourney. Magnificent! - Michael Andersen, Denmark

Story by Sven Mallezie from Eeklo, Belgium, submitted on 27/06/2007
This climb is nice, as it brings you from Italy into the Engadin, and you really see the landscape and the villages changing. It has a few hard parts, especially the last hairpins and the cobblestones in Promontogno. Temperature on this climb can be very high when there is no wind (and most of the time there isnt) Dont forget your identity papers as youre crossing the border :)
Story by Daniel from , England, submitted on 21/08/2006
Starting from Chiavenna, the climb starts shallow and crosses into Switzerland. The climb then becomes eerily quiet as it steeps out through a wooded area. As the woods turn into a clearing, it flattens out, however, such respite is not for long as in the distance you can see multiple hair pins winding up a much steeper gradient. It is these last few kms that make the climb quite tough and it is a relief when you get to the top. The views looking down at your journey are quite amazing... and a drink in the restaurant at the top is reward! There is a hostel in Maloja, which is nice and quiet.
