Story by Neil Abercrombie from Dunfermline, United Kingdom, submitted on 18/07/2008
Climbed the Oddskard on a touring holiday in June 2007 with a friend. We had already cycled overnight across from Egilsstadir to Brekka (Mjoirfjordour) to meet the local ferry which dropped us off at Neskaupstadur about 10am, had a coffee and breakfast in local cafe then set off up the Oddskard late morning. Weather was sunny with no wind along a good surfaced road, some traffic but not busy. After first 13km from Neskaupstadur (approx 400m) I was on the granny gear then could pedal no further. There is a tunnel at the summit, with a narrow entrance and traffic light control. After waiting for a large truck, tucked in behind and headed into tunnel which is about 0.5km long (opens up inside and safe if you are careful). Tunnel runs down hill slightly. Weather on otherside of the col was completely different, dry with a very strong headwind, had to pedal all the way down. to Eskifjordur. Neil ...
