Please note that the route described on this page and shown on the map, is a mountain bike route. With a road bike, there is actually only one option to come to the top from Mill Valley and that is via the Panoramic Highway. Even Summit Avenue ends halfway up to become a dirt road with a lot of sharp rocks. Not so nice on a road bike!

Very good ride to do when your are visiting San Fransisco. Dont be like everybody to go to Sausalito and return from there. Ride all the way trough Sausalito. Follow Highway 101 for a mile or so. And than follow Panoramic Highway. First part is Highway 1. After 2 miles or so turn left and follow Mount Tamalpais(15 Miles) When your are up there. Cruise down to StinsonBeach, Enjoy your lunch and return. About 60 miles. Worth it!

I have climbed Mt. Tam twice, and both times I have ended up using a 39-23 which I dont recommend. It is a great climb with no stops, and once you get into the park the traffic dies out a bit.

I have climbed Mt Tam from all 3 routes available by road. By far my favorite is the ride from Fairfax along Fairfax Bolinas Rd to the junction with the ridge and up from there. The Climb from Stinson beach up Panoramic Highway is the most direct and thus the steepest. Any way you slice it, it is a pleasantly challenging ride with great views. Watch out for lots of traffic on the weekends. Dont miss the ride up Rt 1 from Stonson to Muir Beach while you are there- one of the most beautiful rides I have ever done.
