Stories, information and comments from Mount Baker climbers
Story by Jamie from Oakville, Canada, submitted on 08/09/2013
The ride is absolutely stunning. I rode from abbotsford in BC which is about a 170km ride. That allows for extra elevation and a warm up pass. Perfect for Canadian cyclists.

The climb has a very low grade for the first 20km alternating from false flat to hills that are probably around 5-7 percent. The road surface is great here and it's a gorgeous ride up an untouched gorge.

The final 20km is the lions share of the climb. It's a pretty consistent steeper grade with the steepest being the very beginning and very end of the last 20km. With about 2km to go as you pass the lake and lodge it kicks up and despite tons of snow is very hot because there is no shade. The road cuts through huge snow banks at the very top and there is a fantastic view of the largest glaciers in Washington (I was told by a guy I met cycling up the mountain).

The road is fairly quiet which is great but enough cyclists that I found some great people to ride up with despite heading out alone.

The descent is great fun.

Tip: fill up at the abandoned gas station at about 20km into the climb. There is a tap behind the small shed to the left of the large building at the back.
