I wanted to do this route after reading Tim Krabbes book ""The Rider"" which describes a road race around the area. Id never been to the Cevennes before - it really is a beautiful area. Im surprised there arent any stories about it here. In late May 2008 I did the whole 80 mile route down the Gorge de la Jonte (Magnificent) climbing out of the Tarn Gorge (Superb)across the Caisse Mejean plateau (lonely and beautiful) looping through Meyreuse before going on the climb the mountain. The mountain is a wondeful bike ride through wooded countryside, climbing ever so gradually, giving stupendous views towards the end. Read the book, do the ride, you wont regret it. There are obviously lots more rides in the area.
