Don''t let the stats fool you when they say average 5.6%, that''s because the first 60% or so from the offical start is basically flat then things get a bit vertical! Last time on it was on L''Eroica Britannia (this was the sting in the tail of the easy 30 mile route) and with 42 26 as my lowest gear on the 1984 Raleigh Gran Course it beat my 49yo legs.
They run a hill climb over every year, it probably tells you most of what you need to know that current record holder for that is a certain Mr Malcolm Elliot who took the record from a certain Tommy Simpson (and yes the pros still try and beat Malcolms time!)
My personal climb rating:

A short but steep climb from the valley up to Monsal Head. The climb is tree lined so you don''t see much until you get to the top at Monsal Head where you can enjoy the view - and an ice cream!
What always gets me about this climb is that Monsal Head is busy and the lung busting part at the top is always lined with tourists who think you are mad as you try to give them the impression you are enjoying it, by smiling, whist your lungs fly out through your nostrils!
