Mam Nic - Edale

Despite previous comments I think this is a tough climb, one of the hardest in the Peak, combining a decent length with significant steepness. It is approached by a very scenic lane from Hope.

Apart from 20m of downhill mid point it is pretty solid climbing with a couple of particularly steep ramps in the second half. There are fantastic views of the valley to the left. The road is reasonably quiet although you get the odd coach rumbling down.

The end is pretty satisfying, climbing up to a narrow cleft (nick) in the hillside.

My personal climb rating:

climb starts at barbour booth just past edale turn left up the hill. contary to the published inclination guide i remember it starts steep untill a short flattish (under 4%) bit in the middle before it kicks up sharply again for the duration. i did it on 39 - 25 stood up most of the way stamping them out one at a time. warning DO NOT try to desend winnatts pass on the other side back to castleton in is very very steep going down hill.

Mam Nic (the climb noted here) is a good climb from the BarberBooth direction, head to it from Hope via the Edale Valley and the climb starts at BarberBooth(There use to be a tea hut in the summer in an old railway wagon here). The climb is semi-steep but nothing too hard 42*24 would be hard but managable and the views aproaching the top are quite pleasant.The decent to the A6187 is very short dont bother coming up this way. Winnatts Pass is not mentioned on this site but this is a much harder climb and picturess climb. Head out of Castleton via the Winnatts rd turn left up Winnatts Pass up a long false flat. As you get to a set of cattle grids and the opening of the caverns (the view up the pass is stunning,STOP AND LOOK AT IT NOW AS YOU WONT GET ANOTHER CHANCE) the hill kicks in ranging from 20 - 25 %. Grip the bars get out of the seat and suffer untill the cattle grid at the top. Not much to see here but my lungs never let me lift my head high enough to see the view. Take it easy mattbo05

I grew up cycling around this area, and as i remember the climb noted here is not Man Tour but Mam Nic [corrected - CBB]! The Mam Tour climb is south of the one noted. If coming out of Castleton follow the Winnatts Rd dir Chapel but donot take the left turn up Winnatts Pass,(I will note Winnatts Pass later) and you come to a car park/ turning area, there is a single track stating no motor vehicals this is the Mam Tour climb. If you look on the google map this road comes to an end but in reality the road actually joins the road just to the left and joins the A6187.This was also called the Moving Mountain and thats what has hapenned! You can still make it up the whole climb but you have to walk sections where the road has collapsed or slid down the hill side.It is a very surreal experience to reach an end of tarmac to see it actually continues 10 meters diagonally down from where you are.
