A very hard climb. Lots of shade due to the forest. Best time in summer: late afternoon. Views are scarce, but the from the top you see the Mt. Revard and the Mt. Blanc.

Story by Martin O'Brien from Brighton, United Kingdom, submitted on 07/09/2013
I had arrived the day before and settled in to our amazing campsite at Du Lac du lit du Roi (really recommend it). I checked out the map for a route and decided on a ride up through the vineyards around Jongieux, though Billieme, Taba and Montoux and over the Col du Chat before dropping down to Lac Bourget and coming back to the campsite over the Mont du Chat. I underestimated the difficulty level of this ride by a few points!

I rode from Lucy on the d921 and after a couple of miles turned left towards Jongieux. This stretch of road meanders upwards through the vineyards at a steady 4 - 5% beautiful riding. Through Billieme and follow the road to the Col du Chat. The road ramps up in a few places and makes the riding more interesting. Once over the Col it's a sweeping and enjoyable decent to the d1504 along Lac Bourget. Some amazing views on the way down. Rode along the main road to Le Bourget du Lac and topped up my water bottle in a cafe. I started up the road to Mont du Chat not realising that it would be so tough, 13 km at 10%. I thought there might be sections where i might get a bit of respite from the 10% but no, this climb is relentless. Hairpins aplenty. Amazing view from the top.
