Did this in 2010 on a day when I was trying to do the Aubisque. Having climbed up to Solour from St-Savin, via Bun, I was greeted by a dirty big Ferme sign; roadworks for Le Tour had closed it off to all, including cyclists. Quick change of plan; back down the road to Arrens-Marsous and then onto the treacherously winding and appalling pot-holed road over the Col de Bourdères before hitting the Lac d''Estaing road. From there it was a lovely and fairly easy ride up to the lake, nothing over a few percent. At the lake it was a milka chocolate advert; blue lake, green hills, mounts behind and bell-jangling cows everywhere. Just lovely. A nice bail-out option if the Aubisque is closed or you want a fairly easy day.
