Story by Theo Bakker from Amsterdam, The Netherlands, submitted on 25/10/2009
I did on Kronplatz on 2 august 2009. The weather was nice. The first 8 km are over asfalt, with some very steep parts. I was well trained and used 39-25 as the lightest gear. But also could ride with the 52-blade on some sections. On the Funkelpass it all starts for real. The road is not asfalt anymore but loose stones. With my roadbike it was very difficult not to fall. If you want to climb Kronplatz in one go I can advise to take a mountainbike, make preparations, go for testrides before you make your attempt, and pick a day with not to many people walking there. I was there on a sundaymorning with quite a few walkers. While cycling (with 30-23/25) you must put pressure on both the back and the frontwheel. With good concentration and looking for the best, sometimes still hard pieces of the path cycling is possible. After 3 km the climb becomes less steep and cycling becomes easier. The nice thing about Kronplatz are the big pictures of Giro-winners in the curves. From the last curve (Marco Pantani) the climb is disgustingly steep again over some short stretches. It goes up to 24%. Nice is that there are cows walking freely. Descending on a roadbike is also difficult. I went slow but still had one fall.
