If youre looking for a 1000m+ climb to gauge your climbing abilities, Klausens a good choice. Klausen was my first 1000m+ climb and I did in on a mountain bike which wasnt in great condition. The climb is gradual enough that I could switch to one of the lowest gears and pedal without too much exertion. Theres a long flat bit in the middle of the climb which gives one a small respite before the climb starts again for the summit. There are lots of farms on this flat bit and you can find yourself weaving through a crowd of cows if you ride through here when the cows are led out to pasture. Can be quite a funny sight. The pass is quite close to Zurich and so can get busy with bikers and cars though its easily mamageable. All in all a fantastic ride with wonderful views. Well worth a go.
