Having gone up the Struggle and down this way last year I thought Id reverse the loop. From Windermere its nicer to go up the minor road through Troutbeck and join the main road half way up. Its not difficult but the last section seems to go on for ages. Coming down the Struggle is a test of brakes and tyres (the surface is a mess after the hard winter of 09/10).

I climbed this after the Great North Swim to get away from the crowds. Came down the same way past Troutbeck as I didnt fancy The Struggle. Not too much of a slog at all on the way up and beautiful views descending.

Rode up this on Saturday - never too steep but seems to go on for ever. The length quoted on here is wrong - I made it exactly 6 miles (so just short of 10km) from the roundabout in Windermere to the top. 392m of climbing.

Kirkstone is a three sided pass. This is the steadiest way up, but is probably more similar to an alpine col. And the descent is fabulous.
