Did this climb twice on a trip to Hawaii in 2009. Awesome climb, you can actually start down at basically sea level in Kailua as I did, with several ways to get up to the Mamalahoa Hwy start delineated on this page. As indicated, the average grade is not that bad, but this climb is very steep in many spots, a compact with a 27/29 came in handy. A must do if you are in the area and love to climb.
