Story by guidon from st lyphard, France, submitted on 15/08/2009
I climbed in july 2009 with hot and sunny weather. The first halfs quite easy except a hard kilometer near the Edf station. turn left after the bridge over the Piqué river...the first two kilometers are ok with medium slopes : dont forget to rest ! because the 3 last ones, youre in hell ! no break with slopes to 12% and suddent variations (may be 10 to 13 %) very hard job for your heart and legs ! I used a 30*22 for the last 3 km....the way back is very pleasant, the road surface is very good and I reached around 80 kmh by moments.

Story by Chris Balfour from Bertren, France, submitted on 21/10/2008
This is the unheralded little brother of the better known climb to Superbagneres. Climbed it on 19/10/08 in cool, clear conditions, hampered only by slippery fallen leaves on some corners. The climb starts in Luchon and follows the same route as Superbagneres for the first 5km before forking off to the left. There are then 6km to the summit and the first three are relatively mild at between 2-7%. Then the climb explodes into life and your legs need to be on top form. Over the final 3km, the gradient averages over 12%, with significant sections at 18-19%. The hairpin bends bring some light relief, but on the straights in between my heart rate was at 94% and the idea of managing it to stay below threshold was just a comnplete non-starter. Lots of tree cover means there arent any particularly great views to distract you, so you just need to be ready to suffer for 15-25 minutes! Definitely one of the toughest 3km sections in the Pyrenees and well worth a visit. The descent is probably great fun when the autumn leaves arent there, but just a little nerve-racking when they are.
