reached St John''s Chapel from Newcastle, it''d been a pleasant ride but the weather was on the turn. Packed up for a weekend away so bike & panniers weighed about 20kg. An 20mph wind was carrying some rain was straight in my face. It was so exposed it felt like being pebbledashed. I managed to get about half way up the climb before a cramp hit and my right leg buckled. I couldn''t get my feet out of the cleats in time and fell, bending my hood and bruising my leg. I got up and pushed a bit, I tried to get back on and before the summit but it was obvious I would cramp up again. I reached my destination pleased that I made it there at all, only slightly disappointed I had to get off and push.
My personal climb rating:

They dont come much harder than this in the UK. It involves 2.5 miles of almost constant climbing with sections at 17%. At the summit you are at 2100 feet, which is the highest public road in the country.
