Story by Mark Schmerling from Saluda, United States, submitted on 01/04/2015
Yesterday, after climbing the switchbacks some eight or nine times on my hybrid, I rode it toward the end of a 33-mile ride, on a Trek 1.5 road bike, with a larger cassette (largest cog is a 32, not the factory 26). Being somewhat tired before even beginning the ride, I was nervous when I downshifted uphill of the Fishtop river access driveway, to begin the climb.

Climbing to the top was not quite as difficult as I feared, but a bit harder than I''d hoped; it was lots of work but not a struggle.

Motor vehicle traffic was light (I encountered one or two vehicles during the climb). Views and surroundings are sensational. It''s a section that any reasonably serious cyclist should conquer when in the area.

When driving up the road, the grade appears steeper than it really is, because one generally sits closer to the road in a car, giving an optical illusion of steeper road ahead. Cycling removes some of that "fear" factor

A great feature about Green River Cove Road is combining it with many, many other cycling possibilities in the area, to make any length or difficulty of ride desired.

Driving up the seventeen switchbacks on Green River Cove Road, made it intimidating to think about cycling up, especially with few places to unclip of I ran out of steam. Regardless, I put it on my list to accomplish by September or October (2013).

When a new cycling buddy and I went out last Sunday, and headed down Green River Cove Road toward the switchbacks, our plan was to separate there, with each going as far as he could.

Knowing that the lower part of the climb is only moderate, I figured to ascend maybe three or four switchbacks before I gave up. We wre already soaked by the rain that said would not be falling during that time frame, so I stopped being concerned about getting wet. Also, I had no expectations about climbing far up the hill.

However, my old Cannondale H300, with triple chain ring proved a boon companion, and I made it to the top without stopping, in a mood of mild disbelief. I''d made up my mind to NOT get stuck on the inside (steeper part) of any switchbacks, and by staying middle and out, I had no problem. My friend made it halfway up-- much farther than he expected as well.

The ride is beautiful, when one has a second to look around.

Nice interval climb. Very twisty with over 15 switchbacks. Straightaways are not that steep (6-8%), but switchbacks will nail you at 20+%. Hard effort will get you to the top in under 15 minutes. Be careful if descending as pave is not that great, lots of debris, and kayak traffic.
