Destitution Road - Dundonnell

A lovely climb up through Caledonian pine and then forestry and lastly open country which is never too steep for me to relax on (unlike the Bealach na Ba which is fantastic but it makes me work as hard as I can!) The first 3-4 km are pretty flat along side the river at the head of Little Loch Broom (look out for the red squirels crossing)but at Corrie Halle it suddenly kicks up and winds through the gorge which is part of the Moin Shift. The river has big waterfalls after heavy rain. The gradient flatens at Faine Bridge and then gently continues to the top of the pass. I usually turn around at Faine House, about a km on from the bridge, and enjoy a fast desecent before carying on around the coast to home - a good 50km ride.

It''s known as Destitution Road as the estate offered employment to build the road to the utterly destitute during the potato famine and the later clearances. Locally, it''s known simply as The Faine.
