Great climb, lovely (French side) descent.

Did this col three weeks ago (july 2015) together with my 13 year old son, both on 10 kg mid 90''s steel racing bikes with tripples.

First climbed from Ville Vieille on the French side (we skipped the part from Guillestre), which was extremely nice because of hardly any traffic (on a Saturday at the end of July!) and the stunning Alpine landscape. Surprisingly we met only two other cyclists on the way up!

Finally at the col loads of cyclists came up, but only from the Italian side. The descent on that side looked great - with all those sharp U-turns - so we decided to give it a go down to Chianale. Road surface was less good compared to the French side though, so speeds were limited.

Despite a very good lunch in Chianale the (950m) climb was tougher then from the French side. The 30/30 gear ratio was just sufficient to get us back on the col, with speeds sometimes only 5 or 6 km/h.

Again on the col, the descent on the French side was really amazing! Because of again hardly any traffic and an incredible good road surface we made it to great (but still comfortable) speeds.

Combined with the Mont Ventoux this was our number one climb!

Very long climb from Guillestre, beautiful start climbing slowly through a gorge before turning off to Italy rather than going over Col Dizoard. Travels up steadily through some pretty villages before ramping up as you leave civilisation. The day we did it we saw plenty of wildlife including marmottes scurrying back into their burrows. Took us over 3 hours to reach the top so be prepared for a long day in the saddle, however the views from the top are stunning and how often can you say you cycled from France to Italy and back! Went back to Briancon over the Col Dizoard and that finished me! Anyone who does this climb will not be disappointed and deserves the chapeau.
