Starting from before St Pere de Torellˇ, the vista is open and you see the mountains all around. You climb a little into the village, there can be some traffic but car drivers are generally respectful. Once you leave the village the road transforms into a sinuous narrow strip of near perfect tarmac. It''s a little rolling to begin with then ramps up with 7 or 8%, twisting up the side of the hills, brick crenellated barriers and bridges preventing the drop off. Then there is a lull in the intensity, the road swoops back and forth through a number of hairpins before the push up into La Vola. No sooner have you reached this little hamlet which is tucked away hidden from the road, than the attitude of the asphalt changes. Possibly an even more perfect, newer stretch, but far more vicious. Wide and flowing but the initial ramps go up to 16, 18%! It relents a little nearing the top and the last half a km is urging you to push hard to the Coll. Once at the top, take the obligatory selfie with the elevation sign and fuel up before the fast descent, back the same way or down the steeper, slightly bumpier, other side.
